Gmail added support for a HTML5 feature that has been recently included in Firefox and Google Chrome: selecting files using drag and drop. If you use Firefox 3.6+ or Chrome 4+, you can now add attachments by dragging the files from your favorite file manager to Gmail. When you drag the files, Gmail shows a drop zone where you need to place the files.

“We’ll enable this for other browsers as soon as they support this feature. For now, you can drag and drop attachments in Chrome and Firefox only,” mentions Google.
The nice thing about this feature is that it no longer uses the Flash [...]

Google has recently released a version of Gmail optimized for iPad, Apple’s lightweight computer. Gmail for iPad is similar to the iPhone version, but the main difference is that Gmail has a reading pane.
“We’re launching an experimental two-pane user interface to take advantage of its large touchscreen and tablet form factor. Building upon the Gmail for mobile web app, this new interface displays your conversations on the left and your messages on the right hand side.”
Here’s how to create a Google Chrome shortcut that launches Gmail for iPad:

Twitter + Gmail + Picasa + Reader + Wave + …

Since Google introduced “Gmail Labs” to the users of their popular, web-based email application, they’ve been adding new features constantly, all of which you can enable or disable with the click of a button. Some of those Labs features are “gadgets” – aka small widgets that you can add to your Gmail sidebar. A few of the top gadgets in Labs include things like Tasks, Google Calendar, and Google Docs. But did you know that there are a ton of other gadgets you can add, too? It’s true, but you won’t find them in Labs – you have to add them yourself by URL.
Before you can use any [...]

Three cheers for Gmail! The web-based mail service is on a Gmail Labs roll. The latest addition? Search Autocomplete, which when enabled, will help you find any and every name in your contact list. Just type in the first couple of letters and you’ll see all of your matching contacts in the drop down list. And for other messages, all you have to do is type “photos” or “pictures” and the appropriate search terms (jpg, etc.) gets added in the search bar. . . same goes for typing “attachment” as well. Just think of it like Google Search, right inside your Gmail inbox!
Ever say something in an e-mail that got you into serious hot water? Google now gives users a five second window to “undo” any Gmail message before it’s sent out over the tubes.

I saw two posts at the same time on the topic of multiple-file uploading from a Web app which is a topic that we have covered many times before.
This time we have our good friend Scott Schiller posting on the Flickr uploader. He details the user experience from file selection, to progress, to completion, and then delves into the technical details including the Flash 10 changes:
Due to a change in the security model beginning with Flash 10, file selection must now begin via the user clicking directly on the Flash movie. With previous versions, you could call [Flash movie].selectFiles() [...]
